HOW TO FIND A RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR YOUR SKIN ?

Picking a foundation that caters to your skin’s needs can be a real challenge – it comes in countless shades and formulas.

It is important to know your skin type before buying foundation. For oily skin, you don’t want to buy a thick cake foundation.  If you have oily skin, choose a matte foundation. Look out for words like ”oil-free”, ”oil control” and ”mattifying” on the bottle. Moisturizing and hydrating foundations are suitable for dry skin. For combination skin, use an oil-free moisturizing foundation.

DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

First things first, you need to determine your skin type. There are several skin types including oily, dry and combination. This is perhaps the most crucial step to help you choose the perfect foundation formula. You must understand your skin’s needs and concerns to pick a formula that will work best for you.

FOUNDATION ACCORDING TO SKIN TYPE

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, use powder foundation or an oil-free liquid one. These contain powders that absorb oil, leaving you with a smooth, matte finish. Mineral foundations also work well on oily skin, because the dry particles tend to absorb moisture and also prevent shine.

Dry Skin
If you’re someone with dry skin, choose a hydrating powder foundation, a liquid or a stick one. These have a creamy consistency which delivers moisture to the skin and offer great coverage.

Combination Skin
If your skin is oily in some place, and dry in others – you’re stuck in the worst of both worlds. Try strategically mixing and matching formulas and avoid foundations that are formulated to be emollient or oil-rich.

Sensitive Skin
If you struggle with acne-prone and sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid certain ingredients that can irritate your skin like alcohol and fragrance.

UNDERSTAND THE SKIN TONE

When determining your skin tone, you actually need to figure out two things:
  • The surface color of your skin.
  • Your undertones.
THE SURFACE COLOR
The surface color is what you see first when you look in the mirror. You probably already have an idea if your skin is light, medium, or dark, for instance. This is all about how much pigmentation you have in your skin.

Fair – You’re very fair, and burn easily.

Light – You have generally light-colored skin, but you have more yellow or beige undertones than fair skin. (More on undertones below.)

Medium – Your skin is a more medium color, with potential olive undertones.

Dark – You have dark skin and/or a deep complexion.

The surface color can change depending on a lot of things. If you tan in the summer, for instance, it will get darker, and then lighten again in the winter. It can also be affected by redness, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, dryness, and dullness.

THE SKIN UNDERTONE
The easiest way to determine your skin undertone is by looking at your veins. Observe your veins on your arms under the sun. If they are blue you have a cool tone and if they are green you have a warm tone.
Once you’ve determined your skin’s undertone, it will be easier to shop for your foundation, and you’ll end up picking the most flattering one. Some foundations also come with warm-toned and cool-toned labels.

The best places to test whether a foundation is a match for your skin is your neck or jawline. The right shade will seamlessly blend into your skin color and won’t leave you looking ashy or ghastly. If it’s leaving a whitish cast on your skin or if it’s making you look darker, then it’s the wrong shade.

SELECT YOUR MAKEUP FINISH

A finish is  the kind of sheen ,a foundation formula leaves on your skin. You’ll find dewy, matte, semi-matte and luminizing finishes, each one looking stunning in its own right. But deciding which one is right for you depends upon which look you like best. It also depends on your skin type to be able to pull off any finish.

                                             Dewy Or Luminizing Finish

It is young, fresh, and vibrant. It works well on any age including mature skin as it moisturizes and reflects light, softening any fine lines or imperfections. Dewy skin gives the appearance of health and an active life. And it’s sexy!

                                                                        Matte Finish

Matte skin is good for people with excessively oily skin or acne/breakouts. People with this concern usually want to minimize the oil and prefer a matte formula that won’t add more moisture.

TEST BEFORE YOU BUY
